D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

D.A.R.E. programmes were developed in response to an increasing awareness amongst schools, Police and the community of the need to protect young people from drug misuse and the problems associated with that misuse.

The success and strength of D.A.R.E. programmes are firmly entrenched in the partnership between the community and the Police. 16  D.A.R.E. Societies have been established in schools throughout Grenada. These D.A.R.E. "enthusiasts" are parents, teachers, sponsors and the police - people who are determined to do their part in making our communities healthy and safe environments for young people to prosper in.

Working closely with police and education officers, these Societies are designed to work best in, and for, the communities which they are committed to. Their responsibilities are very important. Activities include fundraising, promotion, and delivery of Dare to Support Your Children. This is where D.A.R.E. becomes a reality.

D.A.R.E. in Grenada aims to:

  • Develop an effective drug education approach for local communities that focuses around young people and their families.

  • Develop the programmes in a consultative manner; and associate the development of drug education with credible and independent research and evaluation.

  • Mobilise local communities to involve themselves in education programmes that meet their particular needs.

  • Provide complimentary and mutually reinforcing programmes for young people, Police, teachers, parents and community groups.

  • Operate as a partnership between Police and the community, particularly the school community.

Future goals for the D.A.R.E. Foundation include:

  • Involving a wider section of the community in D.A.R.E. and encouraging widespread use of D.A.R.E. programmes. Development of additional D.A.R.E. programmes in relation to the needs of the community.

  • Developing drug education targeting different levels of the education system and the wider community too; an ambitious goal.

  • Promoting happy and secure families, stimulating learning environments and communities that care. This can only be enhanced by the important work carried out by D.A.R.E. supporters all over Grenada.
